[lit-ideas] Re: Young men, old men, and the concept of war

Given today’s date (the Fourth of July) I feel I have been particularly remiss 
in writing on the role of the mercenary in war without direct reference to the 
American War of Independence. It seems more than a little inappropriate for me 
to have written about American mercenaries on this day, while ignoring ‘the 
other side of the coin’ (so to speak).

I have not a great deal of knowledge about that war, but have a ‘vague idea’ 
about that conflict including German-language (Hessian) mercenaries fighting 
against (un- or poorly-paid) American militiamen. Perhaps someone could briefly 
fill me — and other list members — in.
