As to the pay, I was an E2 when I arrived in Korea but was promoted to
Corporal E3. The monthly pay for E3 was $99.37. After 2 years my pay went
up to $107.02. Since I was over there during the war I received hazardous
duty pay. That was $37.50 per month. I sent most of the money to my mother
to save for me so I could buy a 1946 Mercury coupe when I got home. I
discovered when I arrived however that the money had gone to buy my
stepfather a truck. Ah well, that's the life of a mercenary. Easy come,
easy go.

Mercenary is a rather slippery term. Are all ‘professional’ soldiers
mercenaries? (I would argue not.) For the moment I’ll just mention those at the
other end of the scale from that which Lawrence has introduced above — noting
phrases like “mercenary and private intelligence intelligence industries” and
“a new company … with substantial investment from Chinese enterprises … which
focuses on opportunities in Africa."
"A federal jury in Washington, D.C., returned guilty verdicts against four
Blackwater operatives charged with killing more than a dozen Iraqi civilians
and wounding scores of others … [I]t is only the low level foot-soldiers of
Blackwater that are being held accountable. [Eric] Prince and other top
Blackwater executives continue to reap profits from the mercenary and private
intelligence industries. Prince now has a new company, Frontier Services Group,
which he founded with substantial investment from Chinese enterprises and which
focuses on opportunities in Africa.”

My use of a quotation from this publication is neither a blanket endorsement of
it or its backers. I do believe that the information in the small excerpt I
quote is substantially correct (and would welcome any correction).
