I'm remembering my father's friend,
who once became quite irate when asked for a check guarantee,
finishing his tirade with, "I am an Englishman, a gentleman; my word is
my bond."
"Of course, sir," the clerk said, "but have you got a card?"
I haven't.
For all I know, they're obsolete.
But this week ebay rewarded me for paying in a gentlemanly manner,
ten times, with nary one quibble nor any hint of haggle.
So they gave me a yellow star.
