Irene, you do know who Weird Al Yankovic is, don't you?

Here are the lyrics to Maggie's Farm. Certainly not his best (I'd be hard pressed to name his best, all are so excellent), but this one I think you can relate to as do I:

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
Well, I wake up in the morning,
Hold my head and pray for rain.
I got a head full of ideas
That are drivin' me insane.
It's a shame the way she makes me scrub the floor.
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.
Well, he hands you a nickel,
He hands you a dime,
He asks you with a grin
If you're havin' a good time,
Then he fines you every time you slam the door.
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.
Well, he puts his cigar
Out in your face just for kicks.
His bedroom window
It is made out of bricks.
The National Guard stands around his door.
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa no more.

I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.
Well, she talks to all the servants
About man and God and law.
Everybody says
She's the brains behind pa.
She's sixty-eight, but she says she's fifty-four.
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma no more.

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.
Well, I try my best
To be just like I am,
But everybody wants you
To be just like them.
They sing while you slave but I just get bored.
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm no more.

I disagree with just about everything you said about Dylan, but that's me. If you ever want to find out what you've been missing for the last 45 years you can find the lyrics to all his songs at:
http://orad.dent.kyushu-u.ac.jp/dylan/song.html

The Beatles were brilliant, but they weren't Dylan, Dylan is God. The whole era was one of heavenly visitation through rock music. Some singers, groups, etc. were exquisite one hit wonders, but they captured Geist of the Zeit at that particular moment in that particular song -- and oh God, did I ever love it and love it still. But I was young and full of faith in the new road being built -- one of the songs at our wedding was The Times They Are A-Changin'. That's God's Truth -- my wife's family was all Republican. Not even sacred liturgical ceremonies are safe from politics in my family. And the times did change, but ever so much more incrementally than I suspected would be the case. Every generation puts a hero on the pop charts" sang Paul Simon -- another wonderful genius, and just because I don't hear God ooomming through today's music doesn't mean it's not there, only that how to hear has passed to another generation -- actually to a second generation now. I do hear things that I think are brilliant in today's music -- but I lack the fervor I once had. Our new road has potholes.

For a minute there... Actually, I'm acquiring a taste
for Dylan. I like his, I don't know what the words
are, non sequitur, dream-like succession of images
that he does, very much like the Beatles' psychedelic
stuff, with a Creole (I guess) twist. I notice the
lyrics Pa is a sap and mother is perfect. Over value
to undervalue, i.e., men throw women overboard so turn
them into saps and then everybody acts like saps? But
we digress. Actually, thanks for this Donal. For
years I couldn't get past my perception of Dylan as an
odious little man, but I'm coming around to his magic.
He really is good. I guess you know this one,
right?
