Hi,

I agree regarding the names. It'll be nearly impossible to find a good short name. The length isn't important as much as having a catchy name with easy
to spell words.

I think the mailing list is the best way to discuss this, as people get the messages right in their mailbox rather than having to visit an external
website and login to a forum, though I'm open for suggestions.

As to moderating forums, I'm being extremely paranoid. I want to have
exactly ZERO chance for any offensive message to be on the forums for more than a fraction of a second. Even with 24/7 moderation that would be a tricky task. That's why I think moderator approval for every post is a must
if we go for something like that.

Long names are acceptable if they're well known phrases -- both stick in the memory. Unfortunately as I say there aren't many .coms left available, with people blanket buying a lot of random combinations of one or two words.

Oops, er, www.athousandcolors.com was meant to be the American spelling, and it is still available. I spelt it the UK way in the previous email. Not that
great a URL, granted. :)

Hey guys,

Nice to see things moving along. :)

I personally think that the community is absolutely key to something like this, and vetting every post feels like something which could stifle its formation. Certainly mods should keep a watchful eye for homophobes etc., but so long as the site is clearly provided to support all types of families rather than promote homosexuality (not that I subscribe to the ridiculous notions people have about these things, but the world has more than its fair share of idiots who will point the "you're promoting homosexuality!" finger), a large section of antagonists should be deterred I think.

I don't know how you guys feel about that, just my own two cents.

A key ethos of the site could be the encouragement of contributions from its
readership/forums perhaps?

As for name ideas, I find it helpful to just jot anything down, get a long
old list going, to start the old creative juices flowing.

So, I've verified the following are all still available (unfortunately none
are one or two words -- there's not many .coms left to go round!):

www.everykindoffamily.com
www.takingallcomers.com
www.jointherainbow.com
www.followourrainbow.com
www.athousandcolours.com
www.everycoloureverycreed.com
www.rainbowchain.com
www.aplaceforusall.com
www.nocloseddoors.com
www.theeveryoneclub.com

Hi,

I don't think the website's name should have the word "gay" in it too. It should be something that promotes diversity and fun. In fact, it should be
quite subtle, not preachy.

Can't for the love of God think of any new names. I'll do some research tomorrow and list the names of other similar kids' websites/ portals. I'll also take note of what material they have on their site and what age groups
they target.

It is possible that some of the games we'll make will appeal to
adults. Haven't thought of that... Can anyone here make Flash games? My ActionScript is rusty, but I might try to brush up on it in the upcoming
months...

Hi mIki

I think the idea of several sections for deferent ages is good
but also- perhaps each game will have levels- so a 4 year old can brag about
him solving big boys riddles.
and since you are a gamer
i expect the game section to attract ppl from everywhere.
yes- some homophobes too. perhaps they will learn a thing or 2...

as for the name

Gaymer
as in
Gamer ?

and i had another one, but i dont remember the word. something that ends
with- fairy - and is in the amusement park...

i think it should be a short small name, easy to remember, not too much " gay-in-your-face"- so a kid can wear the shirt with the logo, and wont
be ridiculed as
" you go to the gay site...na na na na "

like
CNV

like
K.G

we loooove K>G
(kids gay)

or GK
or
\you know what i mean

Hi,

This e-mail from my friend Elite is in Hebrew and I imagine was meant to be sent to me directly. You don't need to understand hebrew to see that she's very talented from her attachment! Some interesting ideas which I'll roughly
translate:

Elite suggests to have forums and blogs (including a podcast). An idea I really like was to have competitions (drawing, colouring etc.). Also there was an idea to create shirts, stickers etc with logos and images from the
site.

I think forums are a nice idea, but we need to be very careful with that. It
might attract homophobes and perverts and needs to be very carefully
moderated. Perhaps even have a moderator approve every single message before it is posted. I think it'll be nice to create a section for parents to get feedback from them and keep them up to date with behind the scenes bits and sneak previews and perhaps even recruit visitors to volunteer themselves if
they happen to have a creative talent.

Age-wise: I was initially thinking of very young children, but I think we'll
create two or three main sections aimed at different ages, offering a
variety of activities.

Another fun thing to think about is a name. Just throw in any silly name that goes through your name, even if it's bad. In fact, especially if it's bad. I'll go first with my horrible name, see if you can top it: Gay Jr.
That name is wrong on so many way:

1) It's not inclusive. It's not only for kids with gay parents.
2) It sounds like it's about gay kids, which it's not.
3) It sounds like a child porn website! Yikes.

Anyway!

Hi all,

This is the new list for the new LGBT website project you all showed
interest in. The purpose of this list is to discuss exactly what we should be doing. The basic idea, as I pitched it before, is to have a fun website for parents and children where they can access stories, games and activities that they can enjoy both off-line and on-line. The twist is that the content
will feature as a setting a variety of different family types: gay,
transgender, single, mixed race etc. etc.

So let the discussion start! I'll be creating a Wiki soon to keep track of
the discussions on the mailing list.

To write to the list either reply to any message sent by the list or compose
a message to lgbtwebproject@xxxxxxxxxxxxx .

There are ten of us so far (though I know some have a less frequent access
to e-mail than others), but feel free to recruit for the cause.

Anyway!

My plan is to have stories and poems that can be viewed on-line (perhaps with simple animations or flash interactivity) or printed offline. There should be games and activities (connect the dots, spot the differences, colouring etc.). Anything else? Does anyone have any questions or thoughts
on the technical side of putting it all together?

Cheers,
