Wow! I know that Scott is right... the screen is a poor place for comparisons, 
but if the screen shows that much difference, I shudder to think what 
differences a print would show!

You're right... the cheap Canon zoom is not reputed to be very good. I met one 
young owner of a digi-Rebel and that zoom, who'd never heard of the 
term 'bokeh', who complained to me that the out of focus areas were 'harsh'.

To that I'd add, not particularly sharp, either.

A comparison with a decent Canon prime would be in order here. Any chance?
