I have it from the horse's mouth that Ted was NOT a Star Wars fan.
But, he has told me the story that when "Men of the Saddle" was first being
published, one the publisher's staff commented that "you always shoot from the
dark side".
Ted realized that he'd been doing that, naturally .... and not quite from the
dark side, but from shadow side ... giving his images a unique look.
"Always shoot from the shadow side." he'd say.
Many have compared his style to that of Rembrandt, but Ted always said that the
master painter had no influence on his style. It just came naturally to him.
It's how he saw he world.
For those interested, "Men of the Saddle" is readily available, used, at ABE
Books for $7 to $10, delivered, in the US.
Curiously, there are two editions. In Canada, the full title is "Men of the
Saddle - Working Cowboys of Canada". But, in the US, the publishers (the
Toronto based, multi-national firm of Van Nostrand Reinhold) figured that
such a title would never sell. The book is identical, but the American edition
had it's title changed to "Men of the Saddle - Working Cowboys of North
America".
No matter which title, if you want a real lesson in shooting from the shadow
side, studying at Ted's images in that book will do it!

And "from the dark side"? I always heard shadow, but maybe he did
say dark? Or was he a Starwars fan?
But I did enjoy reading it. A few new tidbits from your
relationship.
