This week on NASAexplores we're featuring the articles, "Check Your Work!",
on the development of software that can find its own errors, and "New
Glass," on glass formed in space. Below are abstracts of the articles, as
well as brief descriptions of the accompanying lessons for each grade level.

To access the articles and lessons, please visit the NASAexplores web site:

Topic 1: Check Your Work!

A new type of technology is being introuced and developed that will enable
software to find its own errors.

K-4
Lesson 1 - Eye Use Spell Check: To learn the limitations of tools used to
check for spelling errors.

Lesson 2 - Math Checkup: To check completed mathematics problems to find
the calculation errors.

5-8
Lesson 1 - I Need Proof! To learn about mathematical proofs, and to
formulate two-column mathematical proofs about triangles.

Lesson 2 - Making The Perfect Grade: To use inverse operations in
multiplication and division to check work for accuracy.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Checked And Double-checked Code: To check a computer program
manually and by running it.

Lesson 2 - Error-free Factors: To factor trinomials then check for mistakes
using FOIL and a graphing calculator.

Topic 2: New Glass

The process of making glass has been around for millennia, but now it is
getting a space age twist. New types of glass are even better, thanks to
microgravity research.

K-4
Lesson 1 - Eat Glass! To simulate the glass-making process.

Lesson 2 - The Paperclip Levitator: To create a paperclip levitator to
understand how magnetic levitators work.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Cool Convection Currents: To observe the convection currents
produced in water by ice.

Lesson 2 - Sweet Glass: To make glass from sugar to better understand the
process of glass making.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Not Just Any Solution, But A Super Saturated Solution: To
observe a solution in equilibrium at what it takes to become a
supersaturated solution.

Lesson 2 - Indexing Refraction: To determine the index of refraction of
various materials.
