This week on NASAexplores we're featuring the articles, "Lowering The Boom,"
on making supersonic flight quieter, and "Let Me Check My Schedule...", on
the Onboard Short-Term Plan used on the International Space Station. Below
are abstracts of the articles, as well as brief descriptions of the
accompanying lessons for each grade level.

To access the articles and lessons, please visit the NASAexplores web site:

Topic 1: Lowering The Boom

NASA researchers have learned that by changing the shape of an aircraft, the
noise of sonic booms can be greatly reduced, potentially making supersonic
commercial flight more practical.

K-4
Lesson 1 - Sonic Boom: To learn how sonic booms are created.

Lesson 2 - What's The Meaning Of This? To learn about the prefixes sub- and
super-.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Full Speed Of Sound Ahead! To calculate the speed of sound using
mathematics and a hands-on experiment.

Lesson 2 - Making Waves: To observe waves and understand how they move
around an object.

9-12
Lesson 1 - No Air, No Sound: To demonstrate the need for a medium for sound
to travel.

Lesson 2 - The Ever Changing Speed Of Sound: To determine the speed of
sound as it changes due to atmospheric conditions.

Topic 2: Let Me Check My Schedule...

Astronauts rely on the planning and schedule coordination of the flight
control crew on Earth. Operations planners make sure that exercise isn't
scheduled for right after a meal, and that space walks have enough time for
preparation and return activities. It's not easy keeping everyone on
schedule when they're orbiting above the Earth.

K-4
Lesson 1 - It's A Puzzle: To use puzzle pieces to reconstruct the crew's
day on the Station.

Lesson 2 - Will I Make It In Time? To calculate elapsed time in order to
see if enough time has been allocated for a given activity.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Mixed-Up Monday: To use critical thinking skills to modify an
astronaut's schedule.

Lesson 2 - Get It Together! To understand the importance of being
organized, and to design a weekly planner.

9-12
Lesson 1 - More Than One Way To Schedule An Astronaut: To devise a schedule
for an astronaut or cosmonaut on the Space Station.

Lesson 2 - Classifying Matter: To classify different materials based on
their physical properties as an element, compound, or mixture.
