[from Gizmo's Support Alert Newsletter Free Edition, Issue 158, 19th Jun=
e, 2008]

First, AVG has announced that they have extended the life of the old V7.=
5 until the end of 2008 rather than the end of May. That's good news and=
takes the pressure off AVG Free 7.5 users to make a decision.

Second, I keep on getting reports about AVG V8 bugs and how it's making =
users' PCs run more slowly.

My advice at this stage is to stay away from V8 until AVG has sorted out=
the problems. And they will; I recall a similar situation when V7 was i=
ntroduced, but in the end V7 became a very solid product.

In contrast the reports I've been getting on Avast! V4 have been very po=
sitive. Although users report it to be resource-hungrier than AVG 7.5, i=
t appears to be less hungry than AVG 8. And users love the fact that it =
provides broad-spectrum protection, which includes anti-spyware, anti-ro=
otkit and email protection, in addition to anti-virus. It should definit=
ely be high on your list of free security products to try. Remember thou=
gh, it's only free for non-commercial use.

[Incidentally I switched from Avast! to the third free AV: Avira Antivir=
personal [does not run on 98], and I don't like it now. It was supposed=
to be lighter than Avast!, and maybe it is--hard to tell. It has more f=
alse positives than AVG. It has much larger daily update files [to or ex=
ceeding a meg], and it insists on taking even larger program updates [th=
ough it tries to be sparing with the bandwidth I sometimes lose a [dialu=
p] download in the same period] even if I set it to do not update progra=
m unless I ask [I have not been to forum, maybe there is a way around th=
at]. It also has problems connecting to server so it can sit for 20 minu=
tes then say it failed to update. Oh, yeah, it generates a large popup e=
very morning berating you for not updating to the pay version--easy enou=
gh to cancel though. Other than that is seems to be a fine product.

I will probably go back to "good old Avast!"]
