Heck - that's long winded.

In PSP you click on the Transparency menu and all it needs is a right click
on the colour in the image to turn it invisible.

OK. In PS: File/New. Set Width, Height & Resolution to be compatible to the
image on which you want a transparent area.. Set Color Mode to 'RGB Color',
'8 bit'. Set Background contents to 'Transparent'.

Open your image to be converted. Select the area that you want to be opaque.
Edit/Copy then switch to the new 'transparent' file. Edit/Paste. Then
File/Save As and select Format as gif and make sure the 'Transparency' box
is ticked and Robert's is your mother's brother.

But, having converted it to GIF, how do I then change the background
from white to transparent?
