Set the transparency value to 0 - which is usually white. There must be a
transparency options in PS - it's available in PSP.

Bitmaps don't retain transparency when you save them. Option one is to save
as a GIF. Option 2 is to save as a PNG file. You can then rename this to a
BMP file - some programs will accept this but some won't (you won't see the
transparency in Explorer for example).
