Thanks Gary, I better learn to slow down and check what I'm doing. In my case it will be another version of multi tasking but I used to be able to walk and chew gum! Judith ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gary King" <w4wkz@xxxxxxxx>

Judith,

The best cure is to slow down and be more careful. Once you have selected
an entire document and performed an operation such as changing its format,
remember to remove the selection by pressing the Home key or some other
cursor key. If this proves too difficult, go into the Options dialog under
the Tools menu in MS Word and Control+Tab over to the Edit page of the
dialog. Tab, if necessary, to a checkbox labeled Typing Replaces Selection
and press Spacebar to uncheck it. Press Enter to accept the change and
close the dialog. When this checkbox is unchecked, selected text in MS Word
won't be replaced with whatever character you may accidentally type while
the selection is on. The only undesirable side effect of this change is
that you won't be able to select a word or paragraph and replace it by
typing or pasting new text.

I had a client once upon a time who had to resort to the above solution
because she just couldn't remember to remove the selection before pressing a
key.

No Adrian, you understand. I save my work quite often as I go along and I
save it before I realize that most of it is no longer there. Is there a
one
pill cure for stupidity?
