I've experienced times where a restart was required for jaws to start working again. The shortcut would bring up the jaws menu, so obviously it was running, but it sure wasn't functioning. Having the desktop icon is nice and does the job most of the time, but sometimes it just isn't enough. Pressing and releasing it will put the computer into sleep or hibernation mode (the two are different). A reasonable explanation is at: http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/computers-sleep.html ). Pressing and holding the power button will cause a full power off after several seconds. I've seen this require holding the power button for up to ten seconds. So if you press the power button then press it again and the computer returns to wherever it was before you hit the power button the first time you were almost certainly only putting it into sleep mode. Sleep won't help your computer recover from anything and in fact can make things worse in some instances. The keyboard power button is almost exclusively a "sleep" button rather than a duplicate of the on-case button. It seems to be happening when I'm moving quickly with the JAWS cursor. JFW just completely stops, along with any sounds going through that particular sound card. The only way to get JAWS back is to hit my power button which powers down the system, and then try restarting the computer. I can't even get Narrator to start speaking. I had someone look at things on the screen, and it's as if JFW is in the system tray, but not resident in memory.
