If you know the product you wish to buy, you can find it on Amazon by going to Google, and then entering the product name and the word "amazon" in the search field. Not only does that take you to the product page, but from there the link to the shopping cart works.
This is hardly a complete solution. It's still too cumbersome to search around Amazon for other products, and I can no longer get a "contact us" link to take me where it's supposed to.
I haven't tried the solution Michael (I believe it was Michael G) suggested of the Amazon mobile site.
