I think Cy is exactly correct. I see the same thing here when I install
JAWS with virus protection active (we run McAfee virus shield). The first
execution of the JAWS authorization seems to duke it out with McAfee and
turns it off, at the same time forcing a failure of the authorization.
We're on WindowsXP pro and it gives me an error that references NT. Once I
clear that, I restart the authorization program. The second time, it
completes but the virus protection stays off until the system is restarted.
It works but it looks a bit weird.

It does this each time I un-install the authorization as well. If I don't
un-install the second time, it stays on the system. Its a good idea to be
sure of the key counts (coming and going) so I don't lose my key. I hope
that makes sense. I test assistive technology for our agency, so I re-image
the computer on a regular basis. This JAWS authorization drill happens each
time, and has since JAWS 4.5. It would be a better approach, of course, to
turn off the virus protection prior to running the authorization.

You could check the disk. If you insert the disk I believe one o the
options is to see how many keys remain on it. You can load the key from
floppy to hard drive or load the key back from the hard drive to floppy.
I also believe that the anti virus program prohibited the loading of the
key from the floppy because it thought the software FS uses was a virus.

Actually, I downloaded and installed Jaws5.0 several weeks ago, but to
day I recieved my authorization disk. When I ran the disk first time,
jaws took it, and when I went to help-menu in jaws and hit letter a, it
correctly identified the serial number and the remaining upgrades. When
I restarted Jaws, it restarted in Demo mode and asked me for
authorization disk and warned me about disabling Antivirus Program. I
did just that and it worked. The first time, however, I did not disable
the antivirus program. So, should I still assume that it sucked up one
key only? Thanks!
