Here is a follow up message from FS that I just received regarding this problem:

This is a known issue that our development team is aware of and is working
towards resolution. We thank you for bringing this to our attention, however,
your fix will be available with JAWS 10.0 which is scheduled for later this
year."
I think if enough people write FS regarding this issue, they possibly could
have a fix in place before version 10. Writing this list and turning it into a
political debate will accomplish nothing. Plus James would probably appreciate
this.

For what it's worth, I copied the ticket number into the subject line of an
email and addressed a note to FS saying that I shared your interest in
seeing this broken and once very useful feature restored to functionality.
And I cc'd Brian Carver and Eric Damery, as well.
Let's hope for the best. It's a wonder that this hasn't been fixed over the
long time since it broke somewhere just before Jaws 9 was introduced, if I
recall correctly. Maybe something will finally be done about it? Let's hope.
