Chris, I use a laptop and if you want to use your desktop as a laptop and
use the "imbedded" keyboard commands as you are suggesting, you can do this
by going to the jaws interface with insert J and under basic options move to
the control for the type of keyboard layout you want to use and change it to
the laptop configuration choice. The laptop reading commands get you
around the numeric keyboard commands since most laptops do not have a
numeric keypad so that to do a "say line" is insert key plus letter h, say
next word is insert key plus letter L, current word is insert key plus
letter K, previous word is insert key plus letter K etc.
In fact, to make it easier, you can have either the caps lock key and or the
alt key work as the jaws or insert key. I use the laptop configuration
which makes the caps lock key serve as an insert key/jaws key. Under the
jaws help system you can get the complete listing of laptop commands. When
you change to this keyboard configuration, you can also still use the
numeric keypad. in fact, I have my desktop set to use the laptop keyboard
layout and so have this dual functionality.

Ah, I see why the confusion. The thing is that instead of hitting escape,
and then moving to the next message, and pressing enter to open it, I can
hit Control D, Control comma, Control Period to navigate without actually
having to escape one message and then have to reenter the next message.
See, I can go directly to the next message and skip those extra steps. The
dilemma is my hand flying all over the keyboard. I guess what I'm trying to
get away from is being solely dependant on the num pad for things like say
all, read current line, read current sentence, etc. I'd like to keep my
hand in the typing position more often. And I'd rather avoid having to
escape each message. Outlook XP can be a bit too sluggish for my tastes
when I escape out of one message and than arrow to the next one, so it's not
what I prefer to do.
I feel like somewhere I have heard of alternatives to using the num pad for
reading current sentences, say all, etc. This is what I was wondering
about.

just tap e Escape with a finger on your left hand, then arrow down to the
ext message and do whatever you want to. Why do you feel obligated to use
those keyboard letter commands for things that don't need any commands,
even? Do you know what I'm saying? Are people taught that they must use a
certain list of commands in Outlook or Outlook Express? Little of this
stuff is necessary at all. For instance, I never have any problem such as
what you describe, at all.
Maybe this will suggest a different approach? I hope so. Sorry you're feeling so inconvenienced. It certainly sounds like a hassle, the methods you describe.

Hi. I use the num pad quite frequently to read documents, E-mail,
and the Internet. It is quite handy. However, often it can be cumbersome
to jump back and forth from the num pad to the left, back to the rest of the
keyboard.
For example, in Outlook while in a message, I press Insert Num pad 2 to read
all. Then I have to move my right hand all the way over so I can do a
Control Comma or period to move on to the next message or Control D to
delete the message. Back and forth, back and forth. It gets rather old as
you can imagine.
My question is are their keystrokes that I'm not aware of that I could use
that are not on the num pad for these particular circumstances, such as a
read all, for example? There are times it would be much simpler to keep my
hands in the typing position. The less jumping around I do the better.
