I got one from ebay, and made darn sure that it was just a standard keypad. You can most certainly use the Jaws desktop configuration on a laptop, with a numeric keypad. I returned the Targus keypad. From what you have said, I expect your trouble is the keypad. If you decide to try another keypad, just be sure it is a straightforward, no nonsense one. I'm not exactly sure about this, but I think they are putting the equals sign on the Enter key for Mac users, and as I said before, Jaws doesn't like it.
