Hi all.
I think those just starting out with servers perhaps should use Windows Terminal Services, which has been integrated since Windows 2000 Server (am I right here guys?). It's just easier to configure as a "role", easy to get connected from a Terminal Services client like Remote Desktop Connection, and so on compared to Citrix.

What exactly does Citrix offer that RDP doesn't? I could understand
the need for a product like Citrix when terminal services was a
separate add-on package for windows (through the time of NT4, maybe 2k
not sure there), but really don't see it now.

Is it just inertia or is there something more I am unaware of?

Getting the authorization code can be a problem. In fact, it was such a
problem for our IT folks (and they were in charge of 2,000 users) at my
old firm that they leaned on me to drop JAWS and go with Window-Eyes,
which doesn't have the same authorization code problem.
I can't tell you why it is a problem, but don't feel like the lone ranger
in dealing with this, and you may have to escalate through Freedom
Scientific technical support a couple of levels. Even then, it may not
work.
I'm so glad not to be using Citrix any more.

I am currently trying to access my work place thru Citrix. My Network
Operations team is working with Freedom Scientific. The only problem left
is
having the Server get the authorization Code from the remote client.

Well I can't understand how to get Citrix working. I tried to act my
virtual machine as a remote server but I just didn't understand how to
work with Citrix at all. On the client I had Citrix Xen Desktop and on
the
server I also had that. Might as well go back to Microsoft Remote
Desktop/Terminal Services.

Well, Firebox is great for some things, but not for others. With Citrix
you are, in effect, logged on to a remote computer, and the local client
receives only frames. That's a bit over-simplified, but the concept is
that the programs run remotely, and the local client acts essentially as
a terminal.
The good thing is that you are, in fact, logged into the remote machine.
With Firebox, you are not logged into a remote machine -- just the
firebox. So, it is like the disk I/O is piped to the remote servers.
Everything else is local. You are running all your own applications
locally. For that reason, JAWS doesn't have to be loaded anywhere other
than on the local machine. For that very reason, however, it is not a
useful tool to log onto a remote computer.

Hi all.
Does Firebox allow you to log on to servers remotely then? If so can I
use a screen reader in a terminal session? Or can I only do this with
actual Remote Desktop/Terminal Services or Citrix.

I haven't used JAWS with Citrix since JFW version 7. Then, it was kind
of a pain. Periodically, JAWS would claim that I didn't have proper
authorization. Often, when the screen saver came on, it would
disconnect. In fact, our systems administrator was so frustrated with
JAWS that I was strongly encouraged to switch to Window-Eyes, which I
did.
I've now switched firms, and couldn't get Window-Eyes to work with our
Web-based document management system. So, i switched back to JAWS (on
Version 11).
We have something called "Firebox." It is, apparently, a kind of VPN
application. I run it from the desktop, enter my password, and
suddenly,
I have access to Network drives. All loads and saves go to the network
drives (unless I specify otherwise). The applications, however, all run
locally. It is the next best thing to being at my desk, in the office,
with the laptop connected to the docking station. Sometimes, I even
think it is better.
JAWS resides only on my laptop. No administrators have to load anything
on any servers. In short, it is wonderful.
Going back to Citrix would be like going back to the stone age.
I must confess; I have a strong preference for small applications that
do their thing flawlessly and then get the heck out of the way. Firebox
does exactly that. Sometimes, if I'm concentrating, I forget I'm
remotely connected through Firebox. I could never, ever say that with
Citrix, whether I was running JAWS or Window-Eyes.
So, if your VPN is like Firebox or is Firebox, run, don't walk, to use
that option.
I used to have to deal with a Citrix administrator to fix something
fairly frequently. He and I became fast friends. I've never called an
administrator with Firebox.

Is anyone using CITRIX to connect to their workplace? I have the
chance to work from home and the two choices I have is to use VPN
or
      CITRIX.
Pros and Cons to each way.
