What I find odd about JAWS's behaviour as you describe it is not that it announces the existence of feeds, but that you have to press a key to continue. I'm not sure what the point of requiring a keypress would be.
Version 7 introduced built-in support for subscribing to feeds to Internet Explorer. So I doubt JAWS would announce the presence of feeds with Internet Explorer 6. I'd hope it would announce the presence of feeds with Firefox 1.5 and later, which also have built-in feed support, but the manual is silent on that point. The manual's instructions about actually subscribing to feeds with ALT + J describe an Internet Explorer interface, not a JAWS one.
In Firefox, you would go to the Bookmarks menu and select "Subscribe to this page". You can also configure Firefox, as I do, to send feed subscriptions to an external feed collecting service such as Bloglines so that your list of subscriptions is not tied to your local machine. Last, is this procedure only possible as described if you're using IE 7, or is it possible to do the RSS thing according to these instructions in IE 6, as well? It's not senseless; it's an audio equivalent to the visual notification
that browsers provide to sighted users when a feed is present.

Here's what the JAWS manual says about the subject:


Feeds

A Web feed is a way to subscribe to your favorite Web sites and
receive updated content. This content can consist of headlines,
articles, podcasts, summaries, and so on. Internet Explorer constantly
scans the Web pages that you visit to see if they support Web feeds. If
a page supports a Web feed, JAWS will announce, "RSS Feeds available."




Adding a Feed

To add a feed, do the following: Press ALT+J and then press ENTER to
view feeds on the page. Select Plus button subscribe to this feed.
Choose Subscribe. Viewing a List of Feeds

To verify that the feed was added, do the following: Press CTRL+J to
open the Feeds tree view. Use the UP or DOWN ARROW keys to locate the
newly added feed in the
Feeds list.

One more short cut key I use is when I hear Jaws say RSS feed I press Alt+J 
to subscribe to the feed if it is one I'm interested in.

Although it isn't JAWS specific, there is a quick reference guide to IE7 at 
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/quickref.mspx.

The most common hotkeys I use include:

Ctrl+t to open a new tab.
Ctrl+shift+q to list all open tabs.
Ctrl+j to list RSS feeds I've subscribed to.
Ctrl+e to put focus in the search box

Some settings changes you may want to make:

1. Have IE play a sound when an RSS feed is detected by opening Internet
Options, selecting the content tab and then feed settings. There's a check 
box to have a sound played.
2. You may also want to explore some of the tab settings.  You can ensure
that you only get one IE window open all the time by making some adjustments as to whether new pop-ups open in a new tab, a new window or if IE decides. 
Personally I set this to open in a new tab.

On this topic, may I ask how difficult it is to learn how to use IE 7 if you 

install it? With Jaws V. 8.0.2107, of course, is what I'm talking about.
I've heard that it's only got a few features that a person would have to
learn, like this thing about tabbed windows, but even then, what I'd like to 

know is, is there a place you can go to simply read some instructions for
how to use the new browser, specifically with Jaws as your access tool? I'd 
love to consider finally switching over (upgrading, I guess we're supposed
to say) because I heard in the FS podcast that IE 7 works really nicely with 

RSS feeds, and that's an area I'd like to learn how to work with, soon.
