Turning this announcement from virtualize to simply announce will not impact the way JAWS reads web pages. JAWS uses the same virtual display method it does on web pages for other items on occasion. This is one if the setting has been set to virtualize. I'm not sure why this is actually on virtualize on your machine because that's not the default in JAWS. Yes, you could set each Web site where this happens to permanently not speak the message, but that would require creating a special site setting in Insert V (Insert Shift V, if I recall) for nearly all the news media and other sites I visit regularly, one after another, and then I'd have to change them back, one after another, when I go to IE 7 and begin using those feeds sometimes. So the insert v menu isn't much help to me in this instance. When you mention "virtualize," should I understand that what you mean is that you're thinking that the announcement is a Jaws thing, related to the virtual page that Jaws is presenting instead of the "real" Web page? I get a little confused when the virtualize word appears in contexts like this, as if it might be something you might want to toggle off, which I would not want to, because I believe that would remove the Jaws functionality, or at least send it back to early, primitive times, if I remember how it used to work with Jaws. Very Jaws cursor kind of operation, sort of. Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kelly Ford" <kelly@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, May 23, 2007 4:25 AM Subject: RE: IE 7 and JAWS This sounds like one of the settings for JAWS has changed. The next time you are in IE. Press ins+v and arrow down to the verbosity entry talking about RSS availability. My guess is that it is set to virtualize. Change it to either announce or off. Maybe it's not accurate to call this a pop-up. In any case, it's a small window that appears covering the top quarter of a loading Web page and seems to have only the message RSS Feeds available and a Close button on it. If it were really a literal pop-up, I suppose my IE6 pop-blocker would prevent it from appearing. In any case, it's a visible window-like display that doesn't allow the Web page to fully load until you close it. Hope that's more clear. the at the ----- Original Message ----- From: "Russell Solowoniuk" <RSOLOWONIUK@xxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, May 22, 2007 9:01 PM Subject: RE: IE 7 and JAWS Hi Yardbird, For me I don't get a popup window, just an announcement that there is an RSS reed available on the website. I can then read the page and find out what the RSS feed is about, and if it's interesting I press Alt+J and I'm placed in a window that allows me to subscribe to the feed. Then, at a later time I can press CTRL+J to bring up a list of all the feeds I've subscried to and press enter on the one I want to read. Just press control J if you want to? How come there aren't any instructions right on that pop-up? It seems like such a senseless thing (I can see that it's a pop-up, masking the page that's loading). Weird stuff. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Russell Solowoniuk" <RSOLOWONIUK@xxxxxxx> To: <jfw@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Tuesday, May 22, 2007 8:11 PM Subject: RE: IE 7 and JAWS One more short cut key I use is when I hear Jaws say RSS feed I press Alt+J to subscribe to the feed if it is one I'm interested in. The most common hotkeys I use include: Ctrl+t to open a new tab. Ctrl+shift+q to list all open tabs. Ctrl+j to list RSS feeds I've subscribed to. Ctrl+e to put focus in the search box Some settings changes you may want to make: 1. Have IE play a sound when an RSS feed is detected by opening Internet Options, selecting the content tab and then feed settings. There's a check box to have a sound played. 2. You may also want to explore some of the tab settings. You can ensure that you only get one IE window open all the time by making some adjustments as to whether new pop-ups open in a new tab, a new window or if IE decides. Personally I set this to open in a new tab. With Jaws V. 8.0.2107, of course, is what I'm talking about. I've heard that it's only got a few features that a person would have to learn, like this thing about tabbed windows, but even then, what I'd like to know is, is there a place you can go to simply read some instructions for how to use the new browser, specifically with Jaws as your access tool? I'd love to consider finally switching over (upgrading, I guess we're supposed to say) because I heard in the FS podcast that IE 7 works really nicely with RSS feeds, and that's an area I'd like to learn how to work with, soon. thanks for any helpful suggestions.
