Hi Doris and Iain,

Thanks for both your inputs which both make sense.

I think I'll just forward on all this information and let the other guy make
the decision themselves. At least you guys sound like you know a good deal
more about the ins and outs than I do!! (Smile)

Many thanks,

Jamie

I consider myself a fairly savvy computer user.

I opt to still use skype 3.8 for my main and installed skype version
and have portable versions of skype 4.2 and the llatest skype 5.0
beta to play with and in case I need to talk with someone on a dialup
connection etc.

skype 4.x has a few accessibility issues that have not been
resolved, for example

- file transfers are difficult to negotiate

- conference calls are much more difficult to handle in skype 4.x; i
have not managed to to become proficient at it

- if the skype scripts are used, sign-ons and sign-off's currently do
not speak with skypewatch as these alerts do not have msaa support.
This will, however, speak with a solution that uses the skype api to
get the information such as SKREad, skypeTalking or the Window Eyes
scripts for skype.

- Accessibility is currently not fully supported in skype 5.0 beta
according to their webpage.

- i personally find the new layout of the skype gui with the
conversation list confusing

I personally have not detected any big difference in the audio
between skype 3.8 and 4.x unless used over a dialup or other low
bandwith connection. Skype 4.x gives better call quoality over low
bandwidth connections.

If your friend starts using skype brandnew, going with the latest and
greatest might be the best, though, as they get used to working with
what is out there. If they have already used skype, I would
personally give them portable versions of both skype 3.8 and 4.2 and
let them try out what works better for them. Portable skype 3.8 can
also be run on win 7 that officially does not support skype 3.8 from
what I heard.

hth

Doris
