Hi again,

I got someone to read my error message and it turned out to be Jaws
orientated. But I think it is one of these fussy Vista things that crop
up. Also my friend had inadvertently installed some update so when I did
the system restore with the non IT seeing person everything seemed to be
back to usual.

Hi,

When my sound went mute (also on a Vista machine) I tried System Restore
and everything worked fine afterwards. Appreciate that this is the
nuclear option but (assuming that you are confident you won't lose
anything vital, such as software) by employing it, then it may be worth
a go.

Another thought, is there a sighted friend who could help you to
determine what is happening?
