I have run into this myself. It is very annoying. Of course if the ISPs
would actually monitor their own nets and be responsive to accurate
detailed reports of actual open relay servers and other obvious abuse on
their own networks, this kind on non-sense would be unnecessary. Quite
frankly I find this worst then the spam. The ISP that I use will not
even accept mail from their own hosts. This shows how little they grasp
of their own business. Anti-Spam measures should be left up to the end
users IMO. Maybe I like receiving Spam, maybe that's why I want a
High-Speed Internet Connection. ISP stands for Internet Service
Provider. To me that means the whole internet. I have an ISA server to
block what I don't want which is the whole point, if someone wants less
than the whole internet that should be up to them. Oh Well

It actually has to do with a combination of dynamically assigned IP
address and using your own server for sending out email. They want those
people that have dynamically assigned IP address to use the server
provided by the ISP. From talking to them what they appear to have done
is take the ranges of IP's that are assigned to the major ISP's out
there and associated them with particular email servers. So if your IP
and server don't match they don't accept the email. Supposedly this is
an attempt to reduce spam. They say that people like me that use Comcast
with a dynamic IP and an Exchange server are likely spammers. - I'M
WRONGLY ACCUSED! I'M INNOCENT! - But no matter, I have to change my
email settings to send mail out through Comcast's server if I want my
mail to be delivered to an Earthlink customer. Fortunately I only have
one of those. It's a business client and Earthlink is about to lose them
to Megapath because of this. I understand what they are trying to
accomplish but replacing one annoyance with another is not acceptable.
Here's the message you get back from Earthlink with the bounced email
and the links that explain what they are doing. Although the message
also refers to open relay this was not the case on my server. Only the
dynamic IP applied.
There was a SMTP communication problem with the recipient's email
server. Please contact your system administrator.

The reason that your mail bounced back is because it appears to have
attempted to pass directly from an IP address range believed to be
dynamically assigned (such as cable, dialup or ADSL) to the
EarthLink/MindSpring network), without first routing through an
appropriate SMTP server. This is known as "Direct to MX mailing", and
is a technique used by spammers to bypass spam control mechanisms
established by ISPs.

is going on and how to alter your settings to correct the situation.

Hi Amy,
Do you know if they are explitly denying inbound mail associated with
tzo and dyndns? I'm not sure how they would know, since the reverse
lookups on the dynamic ip address would not resolve to the ddns
provider, but to the ISP's reverse lookup zone, if they even keep one
for their dynamic addresses.

Are you by chance hosted with Earthlink? If so, anyone sending
you mail from a non-static IP may have trouble depending on how they are
configured. This is a new attempt on their part to avoid spam.

Dear all,
Did anyone ever had a problem that some emails from specific
domains were always been bounced back. These domains can received email
sending from our server. But they can't send email to us. Some domains
will get a error message but some domain will receive nothing ( the
email is gone without any notice).
I'm using ISA sp1 ( I using the first version sp1 last year.
Then I found lots of mail been bounced back. Then I using newest sp1, it
fix some domains' emails. But not all of them.
My email server is Exchange 2k with sp2 and Win2k server with
sp3.
