Hi Glenn,

Not sure about the reliability. 99.99% of the reliability issues I've
seen with VPN are layer 1 or layer 8 problems. The exception being PPTP,
which apparently has a doc'd problem for some configs. No problems at
all with L2TP/IPSec.

HTH,
Tom

I asked this question based on my experience with RRAS as my VPN tunnel
connection for all my branch offices, both with PPTP and L2TP tunnels. I
noticed the extreme amounts of time that it takes for the tunnel end
points to connect, and sometimes not at all, not to mention if you don't
start the services in a particular order then RRAS simply will not
reestablish connection. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this
same behavior? Yes, I have spoken to Microsoft regarding this, and Yes I
did as part of the process do a Network Trace, nothing seemed out of
place, yet, I could never really depend on RRAS for giving me a stable
persistent tunnel connection. I thought about using a black box VPN
solution in conjunction with ISA, but dollars drove the project, in the
end I had to roll back to my original security platform.

Thank U for the update

  G.

Ahh now i see. Thanks for clearing that up John :)

Guess we will have to wait and see. Tom i'd be interested to
know if Network Engines have any plans to make a gadget that includes
isa 2k4 when it arrives, that may be the only thing why some people
would hold off from buying the 2000 version due end of Jan.

        Hi Glenn,

Can't say, NDA and all. However, I can give you a definitive "it
depends" :)

I have looked for details about the next release of ISA,
specifically, if ISA will still rely on RRAS for it's underlying VPN
support, or will ISA 2004 use other means.

         Thanks
            G.
