Position: Director of Public Policy and Advocacy

Organization: Citizens Union of the City of New York and Citizens Union Foundation

Responsibilities: The Director of Public Policy and Advocacy leads the organization's overall development and advancement of our policy research and analysis, issue advocacy, campaigns and lobbying efforts, citizen engagement, and candidate evaluation. Working with fellow staff, board and committee members, interns and the Executive Director, the successful candidate will manage and organize our efforts to promote political reform and good government by conducting relevant public policy and related research, monitoring state and local government, writing briefing papers, position statements, monthly articles, interviewing candidates for elected office, and assisting in media communications and internet organizing. The Director will also serve as a lead representative before city and state government. The Director reports to the Executive Director and supervises two Program and Policy Associates.

Some of the program activities will include:

. Leading research projects and writing policy analysis related to the functioning of city governance, election administration, and reform of the legislative redistricting and reapportionment process, campaign finance program, the election process, public authorities, and the budget process in New York City
and Albany.

. Lobbying city and state officials to support our issues.

. Supervising the organization's evaluation of candidates for elected office.

. Managing members' engagement and participation in three program and policy committees.

. Engaging CU's and CUF's board members as well as experts, community and civic leaders, and elected officials in good government policy discussion and
programs.

. Managing campaigns aimed to build public support for our issues.

. Writing voting and governance related articles for Citizens Union Foundation's online publication, GothamGazette.com.

. Developing research projects and proposals to further the goals of government reform.

The Organization: Citizens Union (CU), a nonpartisan civic organization for good government for over a century, works to inform and engage the citizens of New York to ensure local and state government values its citizens, addresses critical issues, and operates in a fair, open, and fiscally sound manner. CU serves as a watchdog for the public interest and an advocate for good government at City Hall and the State Capitol. Working to ensure fair elections, clean campaigns, transparent governing and responsible governance, CU not only seeks to inform the debate on public policy issues, but influence the formulation of public policy that affects the lives of all New Yorkers. Citizens Union Foundation (CUF) is the nonprofit research, education and advocacy organization affiliated with Citizens Union. CUF conducts research and analyzes the impact of proposed public policy and legislation at the city and state level.
One of its projects is publishing the weekday online website,
www.gothamgazette.com.

Compensation: Competitive salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include fully paid health insurance, ten days paid vacation to start and retirement
savings program.

Qualifications: Candidates should possess the following qualifications and skills:

. Bachelor degree with interest in public policy, advocacy and the civic life of New York, Masters or law degree desired.

. Prior nonprofit experience preferred.

. Demonstrated experience in policy research and analysis.

. Creatively adept at oral and written communication.

. Strong interpersonal, innovative and critical thinker, diligent, detail-oriented, and exceptional ability to work with others.

. Prior lobbying, community organizing and civic engagement experience preferred (experience with internet organizing a plus).

. Proven supervisory and project management experience.

. Proficiency with Microsoft office and internet research.

. Ability to handle multiple tasks at once.
