[Ilugc] internet speed issues with ubuntu

What adapter is it? What shows up in lspci?
Its an intel nic. The laptop itself is 20 months old. Worked well for a
year. Even now the interface gets configured properly and pinging it from
within the host works well too. Only it cannot be used to ping the interface
on the other end of the cabel! Looks like the physical wires that connect it
to the RJ45 socket is malfunctioning.
Anyway, have been on the USB-ethernet adapter ever since. Of course it means
carrying the adapter along with the laptop but just now I tried to recollect
how many times I've carried the laptop outside - just once in 20 months :-)
So never thought of fixing the nic.
