More interesting news:
I loaded a live CD of Ubuntu 5.04 in my machine and tried downloading Edgy
from http://ftp.ecc.u-tokyo.ac.jp/ ;(the same site I mentioned in an earlier
mail). The download started at 800KBps (6.4Mbps!!!) and in a blink more than
an MB was in! It tapered off and hovered around 60KBps. The lowest was
40KBps. I stopped after about 10 MB was in.
Logged out and restarted my machine in Win XP. Once again the same file from
the same site but firefox 2.0. Started at around 100KBps but tapered off to
an average of 55KBps. Lowest was 36KBps. Again only 10MB - am on a limited
bandwidth plan :-)
Restarted my machine in Edgy and the same download. Started at 40KBps and
tapered off to a staid 20KBps. At times it was even as low as 2KBps. ANd it
is not just Edgy... Dapper is slow too. I upgraded to Edgy hoping to see
better performance!
AM really considering moving to 5.10. Used to have that long back and never
had any issues with it. In 5.04 my machines touchpad does'nt work out of the
box.
If this issue is not resolved soon a lot of people are going to get
disenchanted with linux. Especially considering the proliferation of Ubuntu
CDs in our country.
ANother point I noticed: The network Icon on the panel keeps showing the
'Network Disconnected' icon every few seconds in Edgy (also Dapper). Did not
check that in 5.04. Also am using a USB NIC adapter (built in NIC conked) so
it could be an issue specific to me!
If others face similar issues please inform.
