I think the only solution to this is,
your firefox is using IPv6 by default, disable it by going to
about:config in your browser (type about:config in your browser address bar)
i think its network.dns.disableIPv6 to true,
by default it is set to false,
try this and respond,

I think its for sure the problem is not with resolv.conf this is because
ping wont work if resolv.conf is not set.
