I tried configuring DSL Modem as well but that also does not work..
I configured exactly as you said but still I am not able to access
Internet.
I have entered the Static IP, Default Gateway, DNS servers all as root.
I have edited the file /etc/resolv.conf and placed DNS address (as
Administrator) as well.
I tried to ping the dns addresses given it says destination unreachable.
I have also enabled & disabled the network card eth0 and has
restarted the network again but no effect.
When I open up mozilla and type url as www.google.com and enter it
does not show up.
Do I need to do anything more.
My Hathway setup works in Windows2000 very well.
Kindly help me. Thanks in advance.
Are you subscribed to DSL or Cable broadband? Putting my question in an
another way, does Hathway even offer a DSL service?
I am a Hathway *Cable* Broadband subscriber for 2 years now and never
had a problem with linux. The network config settings are exactly the
same as in Windows. I am guessing that you haven't installed their
'24Online authentication client' (this app authenticates every so often
with their Cyberoam server for access to the internet). Ok, Here's a
step-by-step guide.
1) Note your LAN settings setup for it in Windows.
Your Static IP, the Gateway's IP address, subnet mask {mostly
255.255.255.0} is all you need. The Gateway also runs a DNS server.
so DNS Server IP = Gateway IP (just this one is enough)
2) Boot to Linux, configure your ethernet with the above settings.
After this you should be able to ping your Gateway machine.
If you can't, I will be mostly clueless.
3) Download the '24Online Linux authentication client'.
You have 3 choices:
a) Download it from somewhere on the internet (not recommended)
b) Open your browser (most likely firefox), modify its useragent
reporting to impersonate Internet Exploder and go to
http://{your gateway IP here}/24online/webpages/myaccountlogin.jsp
login with your account, and click the 'client' tab and look for
the linux client download link (How Ironic!!!).
c) Probably the easiest path -- ask me by mail. I have both the rpm
package (got from PCQ Linux 2006 CDs) and the deb package (which I
built myself using alien)
d) Use an Open-Source alternative to the Cyberoam/24Online client:
http://linc.sourceforge.net/ ;(Note: I haven't tried this!)
4) The client package doesn't come with an init/rc script -- if needed
make your own! I personally run the app manually by hand everytime I
need to connect. The very first time you try to login it will autorun
configuration. Usually, I need to do something like..
24onlineClient -u {YourUsername}
and enter password when prompted. To logout: 24onlineClient -l
5) Once you are logged in, you should be able to connect to the
Internet.
HTH!!!
