Here is what I have in .config about NFS.
eagle:/usr/src/linux-2.4-xfs# grep NFS .config
CONFIG_NFS_FS=y
CONFIG_NFS_V3=y

You said you'd try compiling nfsd as a module, instead of into the
kernel ... did that work?
