Dave:

RSI used to have an extract command file that could produce GenCAD
output, but that was back in the mid-90's, it was named something like
"valgcad" (I assume for "Valid-GenCAD", it's really THAT old). The
software is copyrighted, and not even listed on their web site any more
(http://www.rsi-inc.com), and since Mentor took them over I don't know
how good their relationship with Cadence is :) There _are_ options
listed in their CAMCAD product for reading Allegro and writing GenCAD,
but that's not free either...

Seems to me I remember that you could get it from Mitron, but I don't
remember who bought them out, and their old web address is parked, for
sale, and is now a pop-up paradise.

Trouble is you are dealing with an ancient format that has mostly been
abandoned in favor of newer ones. Cadence saw no reason to produce an
internal export program when they bought Valid, especially when RSI was
selling one. Mentor sees no reason to help their competition when they
buy RSI, and it looks like they have put all their eggs in one basket,
CAMCAD.

Unfortunate fact of life in this biz, there are so many mergers,
buyouts, and fire sales that if you want older stuff you may be stuck.

Sorry for the lack of help, maybe my ramblings will jog somebody's
memory :)

Subject: [PCB_FORUM] Gencad Output from Allegro

We've been using Gencad format data for several of our manufacturing
activities with our current toolset. We are now transitioning to
Allegro, and I cannot find Gencad listed as an available output format.

- Is Gencad output available directly from Allegro ?
- Is there a public Allegro to Gencad conversion available (skill,
extract, etc), and how do I obtain ?
- Are there any recommendations for other suitable data formats (ODB++,
etc) ?

Thanks,
Dave
