Hi, Keith here in Amherst, NY Rambling on here while waiting for the bands to do something...I am seeing a distinct rise & fall of solar noise here. According to Spaceweather.com, sunspot 1193 is being mostly quiet but is also producing numerous small Class C flares.
I am running the Spectran Version 2 (Build 216) software. It's being fed from the digital data jack on the Yaesu FT-450AT (isolated from the volume control). I am using the 3/2-wave 10 meter antenna up 20 feet so I have a relatively good 'view' of the sky, hi!
It would be better if I could disable the AGC, my old Ten Tec allowed me to do so. I am contemplating putting an SDR on here and couple it with suitable software to log full-time (more or less). I have a bunch of older computers, PC and Mac, available here. The time to build the system is the issue. There's a substantial learning curve to conquer first.
Years ago there were a couple of off the shelf setups for home radio astronomy, the HF setups were running in the 21 - 22 MHz range. That spectrum sounds pretty noisy to me with SWBC and utility stations. Maybe something above 10 meters would be better for a 'window' on the sky. It's worth doing as solar activity directly affects 10 meter propagation and beacons logging.
It's something to think on... 73, Keith, WB2VUO Amherst, NY: Grid FN02ox ____________________ The HFbeacons mailing list information: //www.freelists.org/webpage/hfbeacons
