What others have already touched is that we need easy to use RAD tools, such as what comes with MS's VisualBASIC and VisualC editors. If we had a decent RAD tool for BeOS, there could be sooo many things people could create because they'd be easy to do. (although with some of the VB/VC generated crap on the Windows side of things, maybe that's a example of why not to have RAD tools.. j/k) Anyways, doing basic things in the UI with BeOS is actually much easier then doing the same thing in Windows. So, I'm happy whether we get RAD tools or not, as I already know how to use what we already have. -jtarbox ----- Original Message ----- From: "Michael Phipps" <mphipps1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <openbeos@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, January 12, 2002 6:51 PM Subject: [openbeos] Re: our own language >We have one already: >http://rgb.free.fr/ >(though it's shareware) Good point. >My point on this: >* C++ is not that difficult, just need some willing to get mastered. Umm. OK. Maybe I am not the brightest card in the deck. Or something. But C++ *is* hard. Certainly it is not hard to write *something*, but to understand the complexities of mastery, I would argue that it is very hard. Certainly more so than any other language I have learned. >* don't create YetAnotherLanguage (moreover a VB-like :-( ), there are already >plenty of those. we have perl, python (with GUI bindings IIRC)... and bbc :) I would say that one should not do so lightly. Writing a language *PACKAGE* is a similar in scope project to writing your own OS. :-) >Though I remember I begun just like a lot of ppl with BASIC... >I'd say that is good for beginners to get in touch with the concepts involved >in programming, then get to C++ :) and also to the average Joe, who just want >to make a 10 lines prog to remind him to pay the phone bill tomorrow or so... Some simple language is good for this sort of thing. Be it basic, perl (ugh), or something else. I thought that hey, with a bit more effort, could be a decent language. Of course, ARexx was very nice, too. :-) >But please, don't refer to VB ! :P Agreed. >En réponse à Uptown83 <enochmech@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>: > >> Hello, >> >> My thought is what if we developed a VB like >> language for openbeos, people could write apps >> a lot faster, new people to the os would find it easy >> to code in, and i think that we would get a lot more >> apps to the os, which would in return encourage >> people to stick with the os. >> >> i dunno just a thought =/ >> >> >> > > > > > >
