Possible long shot. Have you tried via a (preferably powered) hub?
I encountered something akin on 2 Macs now. Only a few USB disks will
mount. Format a disk on the Mac, it mounts. Reformat it on anything
else, it won't.
But inserted in a powered USB2 hub plugged into the Mac, they work
flawlessly. Applies to both mechanical hard disks in external powered
cases (so it's not purely a power-draw issue), and to flashdrives.
