Thanks for the info.  I am going to give R5 PE a try and I'll check out that 
'ld' from Haiku's website.

BONE doesn't cause R5 PE to crash; it just happens to install a kernel (or 
stage2 bootloader, I dunno) that doesn't support booting from a BFS image. 
Other than that, did you get the fixed 'ld' from Haiku's website? I know that 
the original one causes problems when buildiing the code.
