I just rebuilt with the patches (r42435, r42436) and it makes no
difference on my system either to the 'crackling', or to the silence
if I increase the buffer size to the (current) default.

The same thing was noted by ttcoder in his comment-6 to #7284. He has
a built-in AC97, but has plugged in an SB-Live, which causes the AC97 to
disappear.
