Do not forget, that on the driver side the crackles can occurs in case the buffer cycle counter is misordered and buffers acquired by the Media Kit are partially updated.

I remember occasional "silence at boot" problem with my sis7018 driver too. That is a single-core Celeron 1.2 GHz PC. I observe such problem occasionally this days with draft of Haiku driver for ESS Allegro on Celeron 850 MHz notebook. In case I have time before going to vacations this weekend I can try check either the play buffer is filled with something by dumping it's CRC.
