I'm all for GUI IDEs, but I expect my IDE to not force me into using
its own editor and let me use whatever I want to. On Mac OS X, I use
XCode to manage my projects but do _all_ editing in MacVim (the best
thing is, XCode supports external editors very well). AFAIK, Paladin
on Haiku will also allow you to use your favorite editor instead of
sticking to PalEdit (which, AFAIK, is a rebranded Pe with a few
changes).

My point is, I will go to great lengths just so I can use Vim to edit
text whenever possible. I suspect there are many people here who do
the same. Removing Vim from the default install won't be a good idea.

BTW, is somebody working on porting the console version of Vim 7.2 to
Haiku? Our GVim is 7.2, but the console Vim is 6.x (IIRC).
