Guess my memory was wrong that I tried it under Haiku, should have tried it
before replying to your mail. Now i can confirm your results. On BeOS, I am
pretty sure that changing the settings in an application was only temporary.

A bug report about the settings being not temporary, yes. Of course the
settings should not be temporary per save action, but per application
session. The system settings should provide the defaults for each session.

I think it becomes more important when there are more settings. Most
translators have only one setting if any at all. For JPEG, I would
personally only ever change the quality slider. As long as there is only
one mouse action either way, I don't see the need to complicate things.
