It looks better, but technically, it still wastes two characters :-)
Can't we get away with a fail-only indicator? There I'm open to pretty much
everything.

My personal setup just makes the path red in case of errors.
This is hard to miss, does not need any unicode, and does not waste any space.

Failing this, I tend to agree with Axel, a fail-only indicator would be
fine. We could even go as far as dedicating a whole line for it:

Command exited with status 1.

AAAAAAHHHHHHH. No!  I hate it when shells have multi-line prompts. I will burn
this place down. :-D

I do agree we should use $/# properly now. I'll take a look at that later.

As a substitute, one could just use '#', as we're pretty much always root
currently.

This is rather unimportant, but I like >.

I'm actually ok with '>' since we're not multi-user... maybe

  uid 0  =           >
  any other uid   =  $

As for the terminal, I just think someone needs to do a bunch of examples
and see what more people like.
