Can't we get away with a fail-only indicator? There I'm open to pretty much

My personal setup just makes the path red in case of errors.
This is hard to miss, does not need any unicode, and does not waste any space.
Failing this, I tend to agree with Axel, a fail-only indicator would be
fine. We could even go as far as dedicating a whole line for it:
Command exited with status 1.
