FIRST DOG PARK PLANNED FOR GROWING POPULATION UPTOWN, A PLACE FOR DOGS AND
OWNERS TO FROLIC AND SOCIALIZE

Planning is underway for our first uptown dog park in Charlotte. It will be
in Frazier Park, along I-77 near West Trade and Sycamore Streets, and it
will serve the rapidly growing community of condominiums and apartments
uptown. The dog park is planned to cover 1.3 acres. Officials hope this dog
park can include "doggie furniture," such as ladders, ramps, and tunnels for
pets. Construction is expected to begin this spring with the park opening by
early summer. No pooch passes or fees will be required at Frazier Park. Dog
owners must still vaccinate their animals against rabies according to state
statute, city and county ordinance. Dog owners are still responsible for
pets.

PARK AND RECREATION FITNESS CENTERS MAY BE JUST WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED FOR
YOUR HEALTH

Mecklenburg Park and Recreation operates eight fitness centers with modern
conditioning equipment for public use. These centers are all around
Charlotte-Mecklenburg, available for modest membership fees or per use
charge. This is something to think about as the local Better Business Bureau
warns that complaints about private health clubs have increased 90% in the
past five years. Our fitness centers do not require contracts. They offer
cardiovascular, weight resistance, and free weight equipment at considerable
value, supported by tax dollars and fees. Fees vary at each site depending
on equipment. Some centers have a fitness coordinator or exercise classes.

E-PLANT TIPS FOR GARDENERS FROM NC COOPERATIVE EXTENSION SERVICE

Once a month, water your acid-loving house plants, such as gardenia and
citrus, using a solution of 1 teaspoon of vinegar to 1 quart of water. Check
all five growing factors if your house plants are not growing well: light,
temperature, nutrients, moisture, and humidity. Plant growth can be retarded
if a plant lacks any of these factors, or experiences an excess of the
factors. Amaryllis bulbs may not bloom if they are in too large a pot. There
should be no more than one inch of space on each side of the bulb. One third
of the bulb should be above the soil line. Never fertilize a plant in dry
soil. The fertilizer could burn roots that need water. It's better to water
plants a couple of hours before fertilizing.
