Until school lets out after June 13, pools operate Saturdays and Sundays only. This schedule applies at Cordelia Park Pool, 2100 North Davidson Street and Double Oaks Pool, 1200 Newland Road. Free swim lessons begin June 16 for youngsters on Mondays and Wednesdays, 11am-11:30am and 11:30am -12pm at both pools. The 11am classes give priority to children ages 3-5. The 11:30am classes give priority to youngsters 6-12. Older children allowed if space available. To register call 704 336-7855 at least a week ahead of time. Last year these outdoor pools had 24,000 paid admissions. _____ SPRAYGROUNDS OPEN AT FIVE PARKS FOR COOL FUN, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK Park and Recreation's five "spraygrounds" are also open for the summer. They are open seven days a week, 10am-8pm. Spraygrounds are FREE to the public. They offer water sprays, nozzles and spouts for children (and adults) to run through and frolic under. Park and Recreation and the Asian Chamber present the ninth annual Asian Festival and third annual Dragon Boat Race June 7 at <http://www.charmeck.org/Departments/Park+and+Rec/Parks/Parks+By+District/No rth+District/RamseyCreek.htm> Ramsey Creek Park, 18441 Nantz Road, Cornelius. This event includes Asian performances on stage all day, along with Asian vendors selling food and other items. Last year's event attracted about 6,000 people to the park. Heats in the dragon boat races begin at 9am. Entertainment starts at 11am. Information on all these things are on <http://www.parkandrec.com/> www.parkandrec.com, just a click or two away. _____ E-PLANT TIPS FROM NC COOPERATE EXTENSION SERVICE * Ensure newly planted trees and shrubs receive a thorough soaking each week. Soak the ground; do not sprinkle it lightly. Mulch to conserve moisture. * Lacebugs feed on azaleas, pyracantha and other woody plants, causing a gray, blanched or stippled appearance on the upper surface of the leaves. On foot or bike, help monitor parks, trails, and greenways. Greet patrons. Must commit to at least 6 months. * Vet care needed at McDowell Nature Center for bi-annual visits. We seek someone to do annual or semi-annual check on our animals for wellness care to maintain their health: cornsnakes, kingsnake, yellow slider, mud turtle, box turtles, frogs, toads, and anoles. Schedule flexible. * Hummingbird Festival at Reedy Creek Nature Center, Aug 23, 9am-5pm (several shifts available). Day-long festival celebrates migration of ruby-throated hummingbird. Activities for all ages. Hummingbird banding. We need greeters, craft helpers, staff for tables, speaker assistants, program assistants. * Help build fully accessible playground for children of all abilities, Sept 29-Oct. 4. 4-hour shifts available. Skilled and unskilled volunteers are needed to help with hospitality, first aid, children's activities and construction work. We need individuals, families, church groups, companies, clubs, fraternities and sororities, sports teams!
