Born in uptown's Third Ward neighborhood, Bearden (1911-1988) became one of America's best known black artists, painting at a studio in Harlem in his adult life. A mosaic of one of his works is displayed on the first floor of the main public library, 310 North Tryon St. Property for Bearden Park is involved in a complex public-private land swap of several sites including land for a new uptown stadium for the Charlotte Knights baseball team. The land deal still faces a legal challenge. <http://www.charmeck.org/NR/rdonlyres/etndv2jr4fflh6al5ouvq3pfgz6nzsn4acj3vl prf6wi27nwxcf5xeawjj3bcatibft2wn5booyxzofd7zzirqvl3ra/SkylineatWestPark.jpg> Romare Bearden Park will be developed in a block off Church Street in uptown Charlotte. _____ PARTNERSHIP TO BUILD PLAYGROUND PARK FOR CHILDREN IN FOURTH WARD As the residential population of uptown Charlotte grows, need for more recreation for children in the area becomes more apparent. Park and Recreation will partner with Center City Partners and Friends of Fourth Ward to build the new 9th Street "Childrens Park" near 9th and Graham Streets. Volunteers will help assemble playground equipment Jan. 12, on county-owned property. Park and Rec Staff will put finishing touches on the park and open it to the public. This park will feature playgrounds geared for toddlers and for children ages 3-8. The park includes green space and preserves large trees for a shade canopy. For more information about the park or to volunteer to help, contact Darlene Heater at 704 332-9582. _____ E-PLANT TIPS FROM NC EXTENSION SERVICE February is time to prune most deciduous trees and shrubs. Inspect your plants and remove dead, dying, sprouts growing at or near the base of the trunk and crossing branches. Now, when deciduous plants are leafless, is a great time to remove weedy vines because you'll find it easier to distinguish between the weeds and plants. Plan now to plant bare root, deciduous types while still dormant, about one month before the average date of the last frost in our area (March 11). Fertilize broad-leaved evergreens in the winter or spring. Fertilizing in the late summer induces late-season growth that is susceptible to winter injury. (In Mecklenburg County the Extension Service operates as a division of Park and Recreation.) _____ YOU CAN VOLUNTEER TO HELP MANY PROJECTS AND ACTIVITIES IN PARK AND RECREATION!
