Hi Charles and Peter

The pub and school name problem is an old one it has existed at least since
version 5 and I think earlier. It only seems to be a problem with pubs that
belong to national chains but is not totally consistent.

The school problem appears to be consistent for all local authority schools.
Virtually all the independent schools have disappeared from the maps.

Getting information about TelAtlas's sources of information is very
difficult. AS far as I can tell they appear to have dropped the Small
Business Directory. This contains details of a large number of small
businesses particularly in the health sector but also a lot of tenanted
pubs, Privately run hotels and guesthouses, shops, and domestic services. The
information held about these businesses was rather scrappy and did not
contain the telephone number. I do not know how businesses were selected for
this directory - my wife was apparently on it but we never signed up to
anything to be included.

Generally the UK POIs seems to be a bit of a mess. Their is no consistency.
Even within the national chains of pubs there are omissions. Some big chains
of restaurants are missing completely.

The categorisation of POIs is also very vague. Virtually all pubs are shown
as restaurants with subcategory of cafe. Doing a quick search I could find
nothing under alcohol establishment.

I am not sure how much of this is down to Sendero but I suspect that most of
the problems are with TelAtlas's data. Even where Sendero manipulate the
data they can only work with the information they have been supplied with.

I am trying to make time to sit with my wife and work out what differences
there are between the names of pubs and school shown on her Tomtom and on my
Sendero. When I get this done I might have a clearer picture of what is
going on.

Charles best of luck in trying to improve the situation but I suspect it is
really TelAtlas who could do with the application of a size 12 to the back
end.

Steve

Hi Charles,

I will need specific 3rd party ID's in order to check on what you are
>asking. It would be great to have 2 examples of each category type which
>you find in error. Ie. 2 pubs, 2 Guest Houses, 2 schools etc. Then I can
>check on these internally to see if there is a POI conversion error and if

>further. But in each of your examples I also need the real name of the POI
>and what the current name means.

I'll give you two pubs and two schools, and hope these will
serve. I didn't see any of these problems with guest-houses, but
mentioned in passing that there were fewer of these, as I have often
used Sendero to find good ones which are no longer listed. Not only
are they not listed but there are none at all within shooting
distance whereas before there was a good selection.

Now for the examples:

Pubs:
POI name: Woodhouse Inns
ID: 308260002118895
Real name: The Cock Inn
Woodhouse Inns is the national company which runs this chain of pubs
all over the country.

POI name: Arc Brewing Co
ID: 308260002313375
Real name: The Gate
Ditto; name of national company.

Note that this is a widespread problem with four or five examples
within a three-mile radius.

Now schools (this is even more universal)
POI name: Buckinghamshire County Council
ID: 308260002298601
Real name: Chesham High School
Buckinghamshire County Council is the local authority.

POI name: Buckinghamshire County Council
ID: 308260002298605
Real name: Thomas Harding Junior School
Ditto.

I hope this helps and keen to know what you find out.

Best wishes,

Peter
