When I tried SIMD-izing our mix engine, the cost of swizzling for stereo
streams offset the gains of SIMD.  In other words if I had to swizzle I was
better off just using plain old FPU code.  (Swizzle is Intel's term I heard
at an IDF a few years ago.)

I agree.  But my point was if we stick to mono streams we'll need a away to
represent both cohesively.
