Gold 14k. But I agree that some steel jobs are terrific. 18k nibs are okay
as well, but I prefer the lower gold content for some reason.

It depends on the nib. Some steel nibs are just as nice as gold ones since
it's really the tipping that does the writing! All things being equal, I'd
choose the gold version, but you're right -- the prices of gold nibs have
shot way up. That's why some of the cheaper vintage pens are a much better
deal than buying a new one.
