Another random thing to try, but it sounds like more of a long shot.
On the chance the hardware is new (or very old and recently placed into 
service), try replacing with different hardware of a different brand. I saw an 
issue ~6 years ago where we started deploying keyboards of Brand A (can't 
recall), they'd soon stop working entirely and need a remove/re-insert on USB. 
Total pain in the butt. Eventually switched to Brand B keyboards and never saw 
the issue again.

Maybe a weird thing buried in hardware drivers, or as another user suggested, 
antivirus clashing with peripherals.

I have had flakey behavior from operators spraying all manner of disinfectant 
into the trackballs. On one the circuit board was still tacky after I cleaned 
with electrical contact cleaner. Like the coating on the board was starting to 
depolymerize.

Any suggestion is appreciated.  I wondered about McAfee also and I'll look 
into it, but in our case we don't have ePO and I'm pretty sure we have the 
same McAfee on the same WP's in many other locations in our facility.

This may be a bit of a longshot, but I've had some issues in the past with 
McAfee blocking USB ports.  I'm not on-site right now, but take a look at the 
DLP policies if you are using ePO.

Tony,

These don't have extenders or hubs, direct to the USB ports in the back of 
the WP.  It happened using both the regular and high-speed ports.  One of 
them has a USB isolator and it also experienced the problem.  In the past it 
was rare to have to push/pull one, it happens sometimes on stations with a 
Remote Graphics Unit.

Roger,
Our control rooms use the trackballs and we have not had issues with them.
On a rare occasion we will have to push/pull the USB and it works again, but 
this is not very often. We do tend to buy new ones with computer upgrades 
every 3-4 years. Is it directly to the machine or is through the USB extender 
with the hub? We have more often had to either push/pull the 
keyboard/mouse/trackball or pull power from the hub and re-power.

Yesterday during a startup from an outage, we had an experience where an 
operator was operating from 3 different Workstations (Win 7, I/A 9.1, FV 
10.4).  Several times on each WP the Foxboro approved trackball would stop 
moving the mouse pointer.  Push/pull of the USB plug would get it started 
again.  There was very high usage of the WP's at the time.  Just wondering if 
anyone else has seen something like this?
