Mark, Paul,

This GC issue got me all confused also and that is why i posted question about
demoting DC with Exchange running on it and being second GC in Same IP subnet.
I actualy had some issues with having 2 GC in same site. Since i don't have
multiple domains or sites...
Issue that i had was information not being replicated between GC's, DNS ( AD
integrated) not seing another dns and as follows replication erros whan you try
to force it.

I guess the confusion comes from reading too many books! :)
Erly 2000 MCSE books, like Sybex kept telling us that you can only have 1 GC
per IP site or child domain, "there could be only ONE"... and next thing, i am
getting a book from MS Press for Exchange 2000 and Clustering Service Books and
they all talking about having more GC's!!! Cluster heavily relies on GC for
authentication! So we did select cesond DC in site as GC also and that is were
all hell broke lose!... after about a week or so.

I got to look up which books this was mentioned at...

There is no limit to the number of GC's per AD site or per subnet,
where did
you hear that it was only possible to have one?

Like you said, having to many on the other hand could cause a lot of GC
        replication.

        Hi All

One question if I may just butt in just a second please. Only one GC per
site? I have been running two on our single site of about 50 machines
for
several months without error. If I had a user location with say 180
users
and a total of 225 machines and all on one IP subnet I would certainly
want
more than one GC? Are we talking AD Sites or IP Subnets as sites? I
assume
the former in which case I have another question. Whilst creating Sites
is
recommended it is not compulsory and whilst AD may not work as well
without
them it isn't a prerequisite as I understand so what is the problem with
        multiple GC's' per Site?

I do appreciate that too many GC's overall can be just as bad as to
few.but
one per Site seems low to me?

        Many thanks in advance.

        Regards,

        Paul Lemoidis.
